The black screen is a glitch that happens when you're using a 32-bit Java under 64-bit windows. From cached web
Well today I got sick of this black screen were Minecraft becomes unresponcive so I decided to do something about it. After an hour of messing around I believe I have found the fix and it has to do with the version of Java and your browser.
I found that my version of Java was 32bit, This works on 64bit programs but can cause problems. I then found out that my browser I was using (Internet explorer) was running in 32bit mode. To fix this problem with Minecraft I had to upgrade my Java to 64bit but 64bit programs don't work in 32 bit browsers so to fix this black screen you must
==================
Edit: Simplified
1. Make sure you have Internet Explorer 8 Installed. This can not be done without it. (So he says. Wrong)
2. Now go back to http://www.java.com/en/
6. Download Java 64bit.
7. Install Java
==========
Basically - get the latest Internet Explorer (8+ works), open the Java site with 64-bit IE, and download the 64-bit Java. Update java and presto, no moar black screen
