Music to Game to - Soulshine

If you've ever said to yourself, "Man, I wish I could play that song on Rock Band!" you're in the right place. This is a regular article dedicated to putting the spotlight on musicians, specific songs, or even genres so far absent from the music game industry (notably Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and their many-numbered sequels). I'm absolutely open to suggestions either in comments or messages as well.

There's one genre that is grossly underrepresented in music games, and it ain't heavy metal, despite what your Siege Tank might tell ya. This week's band is a cornerstone of that genre. They enjoy eatin' peaches and Hot 'Lanta but aren't big fans of whippin' posts. Also, like good bands around them, they've suffered from tragedy and line-up changes throughout their time. Then again, I guess that's what happens when you're around for over 30 years. Of course, it's The Allman Brothers Band.

First of all: no, that's not a hobo. These guys are kinda hard to describe or pin down. It's almost easier to say what they're not, which would be cute, nice, happy, isolated, or dull. I guess that leaves… gruff? I find there's a strong line between bands that will reference current events, specific people, or other figures, and those that will not (or do so in a more general way). These guys are probably on the farthest end of the former. And really, if a band uses Occam's Razor in a song, they've won me over. There's always a quaint or flaring intent behind their music, so fire up that manual transmission, because it's Clutch!

Clams have feelings, too, you know. Well, actually, they don't, since they don't have central nervous systems. Yeah, sorry, that doesn't really have anything to do with this week's band. Probably. This long-running punk group represents all the basic tenets of the genre. They're high-energy and hard-hitting, calling out other bands and making references of all sorts. Yes, the humorous, the political, the sarcastic, the vulgar: NOFX.

Inspiration can come from a lot of places, and this time wasn't really any more unusual than in the past. What was strange was that it never clicked to subject the songs I was actually listening to to the idea that they could be used in a music game! Yes, I was enjoying the massive 10-song soundtrack to the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater not too long ago. By what I can only consider coincidence, No-Eye posted about how he was enjoying the same music. It wasn't long before I knew what to write about this week.

Have you ever reached a point when you were so correct, so right, full of so much win, that you couldn't even describe it? Luckily, I am not at that point, and am devoting this entire article to my rampant success! Yes, since my last touting of victory (let's call it "Success, Vol. 1.5"), many more of my suggestions have been implemented into games and announced for the future. In essence, I Called It! I can barely contain my undeniable influence on the music game industry in this article, so read on if you think you can handle it.

You'll be able to catch up on the past six months of my sweat, blood, and tears with little to no effort on your part! America. Fuck yeah, it's a patriotic collection for your viewing and listening pleasure, and all by a pair of guys you might be familiar with. If you're not in the #1 country, you might not know, but tomorrow is kind of a big deal around here. You know, parades, explosions, blind patriotism: the works. I hear that Canada has a day they think is like ours, but, I mean, seriously? ...Sure. Sure, guys. Let's just get on with DVDA. Also, I don't suggest looking up what that acronym means.

This band had a resurgence of popularity that I was never aware of beyond their beginnings. Starting from the rock roots of the 70s, they produced several songs that still get substantial radio play time today. These are the ones that have already gotten in music games, though less so recently. They've been around for decades, though, and times often change alongside a band's sound. In this case, pop took the spotlight for the 80s, which introduced an entirely different style for this week's group: Heart!

Maybe, for once, we could all agree that this group is indie? Maybe? Yeah, probably not. These guys were one of my first suggestions, and I just can't seem to figure out who picked them out. I'm going to narrow it down to either Passive, Kopiok, or Taco, since they seem to like this weird stuff. I never quite know what I'm going to get when I listen to a group I don't know, but this one both hit my expectations and surprised me. Once you hear them, you'd never expect anything different from the Dodos!

This group often reminds me of some guys who don't know what they want in life. Then, maybe they decided to make a band to rage about it. They fit into teenage rebellious sensibilities, but weren't mopey and whiny like other groups. That's pretty key, too: I don't want too much sappy shit when I'm in the mood to punch something. Yes, we're in the thick of pop punk territory, and the only way out is through Sum 41.
