• Better Know A CA Event: Thursday Night Gaming Shuffle

Whether or not you're a regular to Couch Athletics, you hopefully should be aware that there's usually an event happening almost everyday, involving games from Team Fortress 2 to StarCraft II to Audiosurf. Yeah, THAT Audiosurf. Welcome to Better Know a CA Event, the series of articles that introduces you to community events that you may have forgotten about. This week, our focus is on the event that doesn't really have a specific game associated with it, hence the name Thursday Night Gaming Shuffle. As a heads up, though, the event hasn't happened in a while; however, we are trying to get it started up again.
The main drive of Thursday Night Gaming Shuffle, or TNGS for short, is that every week, a different game is played. It may be a free or cheap game, or one that's been around for a while so that most people can play. An excellent example of a game that's a prime goal for TNGS would be the original Doom, since it's been out since 1994, and it's still fun.

The basics of joining the event are the same as almost every event. You join the events channel in Ventrilo (Server: ventrilo.couchathletics.com, port: 28587) and meet up with everyone else. The game is usually announced early in the week so it is easier for people to get the game prior to the event.
If it's needed for people to be split up, for, say, Monopoly Night, there will be captains, and people will be picked similar to Captain's Night/Worst in Class. For the most part, however, everyone will be in the same channel. The rules of the game will most likely determined at 9PM Eastern, when the event starts.

Generally, this is not a competitive event, this is more of an event for a group of friends to get together and have fun playing games that may not get recognition otherwise. It helps bring people together. Examples of games we've played in the past are Monopoly on Pogo.com (free), Alien Swarm (free), Bloody Good Time ($5), Counter-Strike: Source ($20... wait.), Audiosurf ($10), Day of Defeat: Source ($10), Gunbound (free), Spiral Knights (free), as well as other games that are either cheap or free. We need to do straight up Doom one of these days, though.
Alrighty, this Better Know a CA Event is a little short, but hopefully, you understand the information I've conveyed. Next week we're going with an event that's popular with our Minecraft players, the Minecraft Building Competition!

If only this event was still active with games I actually play. Needs more CSS/SC2/DODS/Synergy/Borderlands.

I was JUST talking about TNGS with Grap the other day. I had almost forgotten it was a thing, mostly because I wasn't always able to make it.

Shame this event doesn't exist anymore. I would like to give this game a shot though. If only I wasn't already having a blast with SMNC.

If people want it, it can exist. I know I've heard a few people say they wished for it back so, I'm just sayin.

I don't think the event can really survive as a regular thing, but I think it could work as something we do on occasion when there is enough interest in something. Just as an example, towards the end of last year I reinstalled the original Unreal Tournament. I mentioned that we should play a game for nostalgia's sake and there seemed to be a positive response. I think there are lots of older games we fondly remember that could potentially be a ton of fun to reinstall and play together. It would just be a matter of gauging interest and planning the event far enough in advance to ensure adequate attendance.
