So, I'm a music-y dude. Here's some stuff I did in junior high (about four-five years ago). Starting with when I was super into d-beat and crust punk and stuff. That's me on guitar and vocals.

The answer is further explored in these "songs" which were created when I drew parallels between how the general public reacts to experimental music and the reaction to the monster in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. (One of my favourite novels of all time)

Do maps work for anything beyond the spawn? I made a bunch, and they're all looking at spawn.

Is this a known bug for SMP?

I wouldn't normally ask, especially since it's valve and the game is ~$10. I just figure a ton of people are probably sitting on a copy of episode 2 from holiday events or some-such and wouldn't mind trading it off for a tf2 hat or something of that ilk.

May Couch Athletics News

It's back! The monthly news post helping to solidify and retain the stuff that goes on at Couch Athletics is before you. No one probably noticed, but I missed April. It's hard sometimes to keep up with the many responsibilities we all have in running this community, and a new endeavor can get lost in the wayside. More on community endeavors later in this post. Up first are the results of last month's events.

Event Competition

April's events competition ended with Ferret and Ninja vying for that sweet #1 spot, leaving the rest of us looking to the mere moral Doopalot for representation. 7thDementia in reporting the results of last month gave a bit of a tirade against the lethargic competition. It's a contentious issue, to be sure, but I stand by a suggestion I made. Several people who frequent events expressed concern about captaining against those of vastly different skill from them. I certainly agree that there's little room to grow as a captain in a game we've all come close to mastering. My suggestion was simple: pick a partner beforehand that you'd like to captain with. Arrange it days before and agree to try and have a nice, balanced game. And, of course, events managers are always willing to help to make events enjoyable.

And, of course, congrats to the winners of last month!

TF2 Competition

April saw the end of Couch Athletics' Highlander action in UGC after a loss on koth_ashville. We practiced plenty, but were outplayed quite handedly. We believe, however, that we held the moral high ground after witnessing some antics during the match that we found quite disrespectful. Nothing to get up in arms about, since a loss is a loss, but I know we all enjoyed playing and practicing and working together on this team.

bferret is looking to form a team of 6 for more UGC league/tournament action. Make sure to throw in your name if you're interested!

TF2 Servers

One part of these news posts is to announce the music theme for the month. I know we're a bit into the month, of course. The theme is Out of School. Be it Alice Cooper, the Ramones, or the return of Van Halen, I hope there's something educational that you'll enjoy this month.

No-Eye-Deer and I had the wonderful idea of finally implementing the "Stars of Weeaboo" theme for a month, which was met with unanimous approval, of course. I don't know why either of us thought that would be accepted at all. Still, call it a pipe dream. If you have a better suggestion of a theme or even a single song, please stop by this thread.

Captains Night winner songs have been going up on schedule. My favorite choice this month was "Jerkin' It" by Ruugab/Ninja, I believe. From South Park, it was a stupid, funny, and catchy song that worked any time, any situation, and especially during map changes. ;-) Great choice. Other songs picked were "Luminol" by bferret, "Cliffs of Dover" and "Wipe Out" by me, Boss1000, and the welcome return of "Propane Nightmares".

I'll be recording this stuff more closely in the future.

I should also mention that we had a notable event of TF2 Randomizer in April, which was met with unanimous approval and enjoyment. It also featured what may become the new Events Server.

Minecraft Server

People continue to make neat things on the Minecraft server! A pumpkin and melon farm was started outside spawn, for one. Guardian made a neat maze over the water nearby, as well, and Moses cleaned up the deadly holes and shacks at spawn. I finished up my lighthouse, which you can visit at warp Hatteras. Moses saw his name in lights! ...Assuming the redstone doesn't get bugged. I also took the long, long ride from spawn to his place, which is up and (kinda) running. Meatnog also started building on the server in April.

We also had to deal with some more griefing, disappointingly. A guy named wolfman decided that he should take stuff from people's chests by working his way alphabetically through the warps. Thankfully, he was banned quickly afterwards, and now I know how to detect this kind of griefing! Hurray. I found it amusing that he used his nicer friends (still allowed on the server) to ask for permission back on the server. For some reason, his story changed from it all being accident to him admitting the bad behavior.

Anyway, enough harping on past events. If you're missing something, let me know; I'd be happy to check things out for you. Plenty of his stuff is in the public bank by spawn, ripe for the picking, too.

My favorite event creation for April is this lovely idea on the theme of "Star Wars"...

It's a tauntaun that you can go inside to find... a bed! It was too funny to not win that week. Nice job, Doop and Ferret.

Other Games

The community is playing lots of other games between the main ones discussed here. I'm sure there's plenty of LoL playing, though I don't participate in that. I've been going from terribad to just bad at Dota 2. People gather several nights to play EVE Online, as well. I hear there's plenty of World of Tanks happening, Killing Floor, and more. Please feel free to tell or show me anything neat going on that deserves a mention to the whole community.

Outreach

Couch Athletics made an effort recently to reach out into the broader community again by signing up some players for the Comms vs. Pros match hosted by CommFT. We made sure to pick some of the classes that aren't immediately gobbled up, hopefully increasing our chances of being picked! Thanks a lot to those who volunteered.

Also, if you aren't already, become a fan of Couch Athletics on Facebook! I'm actually updating it with the Minecraft event results and perhaps other relevant news.

The Future

A lot of what makes the future of Couch Athletics is simply how much time and effort we all choose to put into it. Right now, we're trying to upgrade the look of the front page and keep on top of server issues and updates. Much of this involves a knowledge of operating servers that isn't quite common. This is why we value our server team, as busy as they seem to be with other projects as of late. If you know a thing or two about managing servers, if you'd like to write for the front page, perhaps when it looks nicer, please let us know. I would also encourage those that don't think they have these skills to at least support the work that is put into the community, be it in maintaining the site, creating content anywhere on it, or responding to your problems or requests. And, as always, invite those you know or anyone on the server to stop by to our events or hang out in Ventrilo. Communities don't grow without a bit of invitation, which I know we can give if we tried.
