*UPDATE* No Lan in SC2

Giant Bomb went the extra mile and asked Blizzard about the choice to drop LAN from the release of Starcraft 2. We speculated on this yesterday and it would seem we're mostly right.

" We don’t currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.

Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, require players to be connected to the service, so we’re encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II. We’re looking forward to sharing more details about Battle.net and online functionality for StarCraft II in the near future. "

I'm mostly interested in the stat-tracking and I know alot of you are interested in the achievements.

Bah!

Why not have both?!? You can still track stats, and info from LAN games. have the information stored locally, and when you sync up to battle.net the information is updated.

Works well for demigod

Works well for demigod.

...oh

Why couldn't they just haves

Why couldn't they just haves stats for the local computer?

It doesn't need to be updated to Battle.net. Look at sports games, they have your local machine stats, and they also have online stats too. It stops people from cheating the stats system for those games.

I agree, this is not

I agree, this is not necessary for stat tracking. This is mostly a DRM. I'm not too put off, I was going to buy it anyway and the last LAN game I went to was forever ago. I do wish they had a better option offered than this, however.
