    WIP: Modeling Naptha

I wanted to create my own flamethrower. I've started modeling it. I have no prior experience. None.

    Entry 01: 02/10/11
    Spoiler!

Current layout. I've built the basic shape. It kinda looks like a revolver. I'll have to lengthen the whole thing to shotgun size.

    Entry 2 (03/10/11)

I've added some sights, modified the fuel tank, changed the funnel ring, and most important, the size of the weapon.

It now looks less like a revolver and more like a grenade launcher. I'm starting to like the overall shape.
I'm considering adding a layer under the main weapon pipe, and fuel lines going from the tank to the pipe.

    1. Work on the handle, the handles on the flamethrowers in game are much different
    2. Work on the length of the barrel, it should be just a little bit longer.

    Re: WIP: Modeling Naptha

    Entry 03: 04/10/11

Modified the basic shape of the handle to look closer to the flamethrowers.
    Lengthened the barrel.
Added chassis support for the fuel tank.

    Spoiler!

The weapon currently looks like a mix of flamethrower, a shotgun and grenade launcher. I'm considering adding some pump action. The weapon seems to fit the player's hands. My guess is, if they ever decided to add this current version, it'd be an incendiary shotgun. I need to figure out how to change the model's pose to further progress. Currently questioning the use of the barrel ring, the weapon might be looking better without.

    Re: WIP: Modeling Naptha

    Entry 04: 05/10/11

    * Got rid of the cannon ring, as it served no purpose but to look pretty.
    * Added small pipe for shotgun-styled pump action.
    * Downgraded the fuel tank to a low-poly handmade cylinder.
    * Did the same to the cannon, much to my dismay.
    * Merged many verticles to optimize polycount.
    * Added handle tank as a buff between the fuel tanks and the grip.
    * Slightly modified and improved the handle.
    * Added a small valve under the handle.
    * Marked seams and sharps for better lightning.
    - Couldn't find how to unwrap for UV and textures. =(

I think this could be the final shape of the weapon. I'll have to test it against the primary weapon pose. Its currently just about over 1600 polygons. Not shabby.
I've started planning out texturing. Probably wooden handle, leather grip, and a metal cannon.

depends on what your using, if it's 3DS MAX, in the Modify tab, click on the modify list pull down, near the bottom will be Unwrap UVW. Select that, hit face in the box below the pull down, then in the parameters box below hit edit. while in the edit popup is open you can ctrl+select faces on the 3d model so you can organize the texture.

    Looking good though.
    Also: grrrrr.....

I just want to say that it's super cool that you're trying your hand at modeling something you want to see in a game.

I'm doing this one just for fun, but I'll be sending them a molotov model someday. Also, found what was missing on the UV mapping. I had to select the whole part in edit mode.

Thanks for sharing your progress, it is always cool to see something from the beginning to almost (?) end. If you decide to make any more modifications post them up.
